Another Student Brings Gun to DHS

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

There will be more security in place at Duncanville High School after the second gun incident in a week’s time at the campus. Roberto Araiza Jr, 18, brought an unloaded gun to the campus Tuesday, just days after a 16-year-old student snuck a loaded gun into the school. Authorities do not believe the incidents are related. The 16-year-old’s case is being investigated by juvenile authorities. Araiza has been charged with possession of a weapon in a prohibited place.

Both students are suspended for the rest of the school year. Security measures are being put in place including random searches and Dallas County law enforcement officials. The school will also install metal detectors and use portable detectors.

Student Caught With Gun At Duncanville High

Monday, February 1st, 2010

An anonymous Crime Stoppers tip allowed police to track down a Duncanville High School student that brought a loaded gun to school Friday in a backpack.

In a letter to parents posted on the school website, Principal Mike Chrietzberg had this to say:

“The student was taken into custody and removed from the campus. School administrators will continue to work closely with the Duncanville Police Department during further investigation of this matter,” the statement reads.

“We encourage you to talk to your children about informing teachers and school administrators when they are aware of important and potentially serious issues. Please note that following any such situation, I will communicate with you in this manner to keep you involved and informed on behalf of your child,” he continued.

DHS parents received a school messenger to alert them about the incident.

T.O. Will Still Hold Duncanville Football Camp

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

NBA: MAR 19 Mavericks at Hawks

While every Dallas sports journalist’s favorite target is now plying his trade with the Buffalo Bills, Terrell Owens will hold one last football camp for his young DFW fans.

The 4th Annual Annual Terrell Owens’ Youth Summer Football Mini-Camp will be June 24-25 at Duncanville High School.

“As many of you now know, I’m no longer a Dallas Cowboy and have recently signed with the Buffalo Bills,” Owens explains on his website. “However, because of my continued commitment to the youth of Dallas, I will as previously planned, host my 2009 Youth Summer Football Mini-Camp in Duncanville, TX. (I’m) giving my young fans the farewell from me they truly deserve.”

Duncanville Panthers Return to Playoffs

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

New Coach Jeff Dicus has paid immediate dividends as the Duncanville Panther football squad is in the postseason after a four-year absence.

Things kick off at Texas Stadium at 6 p.m. but you’ll want to get to the stands by 5 p.m. to actually get seated. If you’ve ever done the Texas Stadium parking thing, I’m sure you already know what a joy it is. Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students. Get them at the DHS Athletic office now because they’re $10 at the door.

Coach Dicus said playoff opponent Plano will come 10,000 strong to the stadium and from my experience that estimate is about right. They’re sending this message out to rally as many Panther fans for the cause as possible. You really don’t want to miss this – the magic is back.

Congratulations, Paul and Rachel!

And The Winner of the Chevy HHR is…

Friday, March 21st, 2008

We don’t know yet. The vehicle was the grandest of grand prizes in a $100 per ticket raffle with the victor getting announced at last night’s Taste of Duncanville.

But the suspense will continue for at least a few more days. The Duncanville Chamber’s Business Interchange pooled their funds to purchase tickets and it’s up to that group to pick a winner now.

Business Interchange spokesman Glenn Carter said they’re going to have a drawing with members getting cards in the drawing equivalent to their investment. Stay tuned for updates.

One award that did get presented was Best Food Vendor, going to Sheridan’s Frozen Custard. There was no award for most pounds gained or smoothest way to cut in line, I found out all too late. Chamber President Lynn McGinley said the Taste would return to Duncanville High School next year. Those of you that attended know just how successful this year’s event was. Those that didn’t, I just don’t know you anymore.

Attendees included council members Paul Ford, Ken Weaver, Dorothy Burton, Scott Cannon and Deborah Hodge. Mayoral candidate Rose Renfroe was there too. I don’t recall seeing Mayor David Green, but I did see Duncanville’s resident superhero Recycle Man. Hey, have you ever noticed you never see those two in the same place at the same time? You don’t think they could be…. Nah, that’s just crazy.

Mother Nature was in attendance manning (or womaning) the Keep Duncanville Beautiful booth along with Claudia Zakutney. There was also a large Subway sandwich that I’m pretty sure was following me around. I had a dream about a giant Subway sandwich once. Don’t judge me.

See You At the Taste of Duncanville

Monday, March 17th, 2008

As a reporter charged with covering the wealth of events going on in the Best Southwest, I always get a good laugh when somebody tells me there’s nothing to do.

Yeah, there’s so much nothing this time of year my head is spinning. While there a lot of events I have to go to, there are others you couldn’t keep me out with an armed security detail. And some of you have tried. The Fifth Annual Taste of Duncanville and Community Spotlight is the kind of thing I never miss. Duncanville High School is the place to be for the Taste, March 20 from 5-8p.m. Seniors can take advantage of a special hour head start from 4-5 p.m.
