One of the biggest political moves we’ve been speculating on around here is speculation no longer, as Cedar Hill Councilman Wade Emmert will seek the Republican nomination for county judge.

Summer Reading Club Fun In Lancaster
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009Lancaster Veterans Memorial Library is offering up some exciting summertime fun for young folks. Kids from two years of age through high school can participate in the library’s Summer Reading Club.
That gets started up June 9 at 10 a.m. with a visit from Zooniversity. Bring your preschoolers and first graders to get a close look at live, exotic animals. Kids love animals, folks.
These little educational presentations don’t feel like a lesson to the children because they’re actually fun. A little secret: adults learn better when we’re actually having fun as well.
Children from 2nd – 6th grade will get a kick out of the participatory performance Texas Ain’t Just Fer Cowboys! Debbie Day will present that June 11 at 2 p.m. You can sign the little ones up for the Summer Reading Club now and there are incentive prizes for top readers, which will be awarded July 30. The theme this year is Libraries:Deep In The Heart of Texas.
All of these events are free, and that’s always a plus in this economic climate. Take from a former Summer Reading Club kid back in Louisiana, a lifelong love of reading and learning is one of the best gifts you can give a child.

DeSoto ISD Parents/Teachers Ain’t Happy
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009As Today Newspapers reports, there is a serious swelling of discontent in the DeSoto ISD. Parents and teachers are telling the school board members that discipline problems are making it difficult for students to learn. The academically unacceptable rating for the high school seems to be the breaking point for parents and instructors alike.
I use the term “serious swelling of discontent” with a caveat. The most recent election results showonly a handful of people care enough to pull a lever where the district is concerned. As one of the commenters on the Today story thread mentions, there aren’t very many parents involved in the day-to-day volunteering with the district.
My mother and sister are both teachers, so I see and hear it all the time. So many parents want to ask what the teachers and administrators are doing to help the student succeed. Some of those same parents never consider what they might need to do, since they (in theory) spend more time with the child than the teachers do.
I’m certainly not suggesting we let the administrators completely, or even partially, off the hook here. Anyone can see there are problems going on. One of the first steps in fixing them is the honest debate we’re finally getting. Things people have been saying about the district for years under their breath are now being said aloud.
If only that had happened more consistently before, perhaps we wouldn’t be at this point. This isn’t something that’s just happening in DeSoto, or even just in the Best Southwest. We’re seeing the perfect storm of a lot of issues here.
There are already huge numbers of economically disadvantaged children in our schools. In this economy, that’s only going to get worse. The family structure that has yielded so many single parent homes is sending a lot of kids into schools that need more than just a teacher.
Those are external pressures that school administration, try as it might, can’t do much about. More than ever, our communities are going to have to step up and help. Whether you have a child in the district or not, you have a serious rooting interest. The value of our homes and businesses are directly tied to the success of our school districts. This is everybody’s battle, whether we think we have a dog in the fight or not.

Taste of Cedar Hill Is a Smash Hit
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009Oh, I am still stuffed. There was so much food, so many vendors and a great time had by all. It was hard to take it all in, but I certainly tried. Ranch Steakhouse won the honors for Best Food Vendor with a delicious beef wellington. Talk about deploying the big guns.
The Best Decorated Booth was Dial One Johnson Plumbing, complete with folks dressed as toilets. Hey, if you want to win an award at Taste of Cedar Hill you pull out the stop – um, you leave nothing, well you try really hard.
And there were such huge portions. I made the mistake of having a little something to eat before, which caught up with me. As soon as we can convince the little ones to go to sleep, I am going to crash out for a very long time.

Royce West Mulls Attorney General Bid
Monday, May 18th, 2009
And so the political dominoes for the 2010 slate of elections continue getting set up. It’s apparently a foregone conclusion that Kay Bailey Hutchison will leave her senate seat to run for governor.
Attorney General (and Duncanville native) Greg Abbott is reportedly eyeing that senate seat, which would leave his spot open.
