Cedar Hill Gov’t Center Grand Opening Tonight

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The City of Cedar Hill and Cedar Hill Independent School District are holding the official grand opening and open house of the new  government center tonight at 6 p.m.   The opening ceremony will feature the Cedar Hill High School Band and the FORTE choir.  In addition, the city will bury a time capsule. Can’t wait to see what could be in that.

The $26.3 million complex encloses 115,000 square feet and houses city administration and departmental offices, the Police Department and the administrative offices of the Cedar Hill Independent School District (CHISD).

Cedar Hill residents now have access to one-stop city, school and police services in a single, convenient location as well as meeting rooms and conference areas for neighborhood and civic groups.  This collaboration is the first joint venture of this magnitude for municipalities in the state of Texas and resulted in savings of 20 percent in construction costs for Cedar Hill taxpayers.

Attendees will include  Congressman Kenny Marchant, Mayor Rob Franke,  and  Dan Hernandez, president of the CHISD Board of Trustees. The Cedar Hill Government Center is at 285 Uptown Blvd and additional parking is available across the street at Cinemark.

Lancaster City Employees Battle to Get Healthy

Friday, September 26th, 2008

On July 7th 45 City of Lancaster employees met for the Annual LancasterLIVE! Biggest Loser Competition Kickoff with a clear goal of not only changing their waist lines, but changing their lifestyles. The creation of the Biggest Loser Program stems from the City of Lancaster High Performance Organization (HPO) initiatives. The LancasterLIVE! Wellness Team wanted to do something that gave all employees a chance to get involved. “I know when I work out I feel happier, and since we started this program I think others are starting to feel the same,” said Laurel Maxwell, City of Lancaster GIS Coordinator.

As part of the CIGNA Healthcare Corporate Health and Well-Being program, over $1500 dollars worth of prizes will be given away at the Winner’s Circle event on October 2nd for both the employee and team that accomplish the highest percentage weight lost.
The prizes have created a friendly competition between teams and coworkers. So far, all participants have lost a total of over 225 pounds collectively. “I have really enjoyed the Biggest Loser here because it involves teams, creating accountability and helping everyone in the long run,” said Jodi Griggs, Recreation Superintendent.

As the end of the program approaches everyone is wondering who will take the $600 dollar individual grand prize and who will be called the first LancasterLIVE! Biggest Loser. Kendra Simington, Human Resources Assistant said, “If calling me a loser makes me healthier and happier, you can call me a loser any day!” For more information please contact Alicia Oyedele at 972-218-1792

‘Murder’ Huge Hit for Duncanville Community Theatre

Friday, September 26th, 2008

If you want to see DCT’s smashing production of Agatha Christie’s Murder On The Nile, you better get over there tonight. The Saturday show, like the show last night, is completely sold out.

So if you go tonight, you will not only get to see a suspenseful show but get to attend a wine tasting from Winealicious after the evening’s performance. And if that isn’t enough, I’ll be there too. Come on, don’t be the only one who misses it. Call 972-780-5707 for reservations. Friday and Saturday ticket prices are $12 and there are discounts for seniors, students and KERA members. The show starts at 8 p.m. but you’ll definitely want to get there early for this one.

Yeah, I probably should have mentioned myself before the wine. Kind of a buildup thing. You stopped paying attention to anything else after I said “wine tasting, didn’t you?”

President Bush Postgame Discussion

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The first thing that ran through my mind on hearing Bush would speak truthfully about the economy is that if he’s admitting things are bad, they’re horrible. The Republican party line as recently as Phil Gramm’s unfortunate “mental recession” comment was that the economy’s fine and this is, at worst, a momentary downturn in the market that will correct itself.

Come Out to Bear Creek Nature Park

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

The mission of Bear Creek Nature Park is to develop programs that promote environmental conservation, urban wildlife preservation and ecological awareness.

The park is a source of food, water and shelter for wildlife and keeping the park as natural as possible is our mission. Bear Creek Nature Park Naturalist Linda Dunn is moving forward with park programming and improvements.

“The park is being allowed to return to a more natural state in some areas,” Dunn said. “As you walk the trail encircling the pond, you will notice the native vegetation has grown taller and the grass higher.”

Dunn explains that with education and the conservation of natural resources being two of the main focuses of the park, some of the practices at the park will be new.  These new practices required closer attention to the park’s operational schedule, maintenance and management.

A portable education office building will be placed at Bear Creek Nature Park for Lancaster LISD as an outdoor science lab for students to learn science through hands-on activities and experiments at the park.  The park will also offer programs for the community on various nature oriented topics such as Wildflower Walks and Family Fishing Clinics.   The hours of operation have changed and visitors will not find the park gates open at all times.  Operational hours for the park will be as follows:

Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
March – October

Tuesday – Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
November – February

Closed Sunday & Monday

Individuals or organizations interested in participating in any of the parks programs, or to volunteer should contact Linda Dunn, Park Naturalist at 972-218-3730 for more information.
