DeSoto Football Player Begins His Recovery

June 30th, 2009

Sixteen-year-old-Corey Borner, paralyzed during a May football practice, has returned to his DeSoto home. He’s earned well wishes not just from his teammates and friends but got visits from Buffalo Bills stars Terrell Owens and Donte Whitner, as well as Texas football Coach Mack Brown.

In an eight-hour surgery, doctors fused Borner’s C5 and C6 vertebraes. Another visitor was Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Duncanville native paralyzed in a 1984 accident. In his first interview since the unfortunate accident, Borner told the Dallas Morning News he’s confident he’ll walk again.

We’re all pulling for you, Corey.

LISD Picks Three Superintendent Finalists

June 29th, 2009

Planning to have someone in place by the beginning of the school year, Lancaster Independent School District has narrowed its super search down to three.

The names of those three candidates are not being made public. Arrow Educational Services assisted LISD in the search. The district entered the market for a new head after a Texas Education Agency audit revealed a number of financial problems.

The district placed Larry Lewis on leave in October and ultimately the two sides brokered a deal that will dismiss Lewis at the end of July.

T.O. Can’t Resist Another Romo Dig

June 29th, 2009

What, did you really think Terrell Owens was going to take his exile to Buffalo gracefully? No, he’s showing the kind of brilliant PR skills that earned him banishment to the New York team no one cares about.

At his football camp in Duncanville, T.O. blamed Tony Romo for getting the controversial wide receiver booted.

“He was the quarterback of the team,” Owens said Thursday, the last day of the youth football camp.  “I think everybody realized that it was upon [Romo] to adopt that leadership role and carry that out. Obviously, they saw that didn’t happen.”

EBJ Coming to Cedar Hill To Discuss Stimulus

June 25th, 2009

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson will do a press event in Cedar Hill ( I love how the release says Dallas) to speak about the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. The presser will take place June 29 at 9 a.m.  It is to be held at an ARRA-funded project on the northeast corner of FM 1382 and Old Straus Road across from the Hillcrest Baptist Church.

The deadline for states to obligate 50 percent of ARRA funds was June 29, but Texas met that deadline nearly three weeks early. Officials  including Cedar Hill Mayor Rob Franke will highlight the state’s work in meeting those goals.

I cannot wait for our readers to sound off on officials calling a press conference to announce how fast they spent the stimulus money. I don’t envy EBJ’s PR staff right now.

Second Child This Year Drowns in MCM Pool

June 22nd, 2009

Six-year-old James Huggins drowned June 6 in the pool of the MCM Grande Hotel, according to DeSoto police reports. James Huggins had been in the pool with his teenaged sister when the accident happened.

After his sister pulled him out of the pool, James Huggins received CPR on scene. But he was pronounced dead later  that day at Methodist Charlton Medical Center.

This is the second time in a three-month span a child drowned in the hotel pool. Five-year-old Tiojai Williams was found unconscious in the pool April 10 and died April 11. Both drownings are believed to be accidental.

Duncanville Figures Out Who “Inclusive” Includes

June 17th, 2009

Over the past few years it’s become customary for the District 3 Duncanville councilman to be alone in championing a stance on a seemingly uncontroversial issue. Whatever the majority opinion was, it was anticipated that Paul Ford would be against it. But at the June 16 meeting, it was newly elected Councilman Anthony Skinner who found himself islanded without any support from his colleagues.
